More Than 10,000 Evacuated as Wildfire Spreads in Southwestern France
More than 10,000 people were evacuated overnight after a fast-moving wildfire burned through about 2,000 hectares of forest in southwestern France near Bordeaux, authorities said.
Around 500 firefighters are working to contain the blaze, which is threatening areas near the popular Arcachon Bay tourist region. Many of those evacuated were visitors staying at nearby campsites.
The wildfire comes as France experiences worsening drought conditions following multiple heatwaves this year. According to European data, wildfires have already burned more land across the continent in 2026 than the average annual total recorded over the past two decades.
Officials said no injuries had been reported, but firefighting efforts remain challenging as crews continue battling the rapidly spreading flames.
