Microsoft to Fund Mistral's European AI Expansion in Multibillion-Dollar Deal
Microsoft has announced a multibillion-dollar partnership with French AI startup Mistral to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure across Europe, strengthening the region's growing push for AI independence.
Under the agreement, Microsoft will support Mistral's computing infrastructure in France while making the startup's AI models more widely available through Microsoft Azure and other cloud services.
Expanding AI in Europe
The partnership will allow Azure customers to build AI applications using Mistral's European data centers, providing businesses with more options for hosting AI workloads, particularly in regulated industries.
Mistral's latest AI models will also be integrated into Microsoft's Foundry platform and Copilot Studio, giving developers additional tools for building AI-powered applications.
Supporting AI Sovereignty
The deal reflects Europe's growing effort to reduce reliance on foreign technology while expanding local AI infrastructure.
Microsoft said the partnership combines European AI innovation with its cloud and security capabilities, helping customers maintain greater control over where their AI data is processed.
Growing Competition in AI
Mistral has emerged as one of Europe's leading AI companies, focusing on open AI models and enterprise customers. The agreement is expected to accelerate its expansion while helping Microsoft meet rising demand for advanced AI services across Europe.
Both companies said they will work together on expanding AI adoption and growing their businesses in the European market.
