Anthropic Launches Opus 5 AI Model With Lower Cost and Improved Efficiency

Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5, its newest artificial intelligence model designed to deliver near-frontier performance while significantly reducing computing costs.

The San Francisco-based AI startup says Opus 5 offers capabilities close to its flagship Fable 5 model at roughly half the price, making advanced AI more accessible for businesses, developers, and everyday enterprise workloads.

Opus 5 Targets Everyday AI and Coding Tasks

According to Anthropic, Opus 5 is optimized for common workplace applications, including document analysis, software development, coding assistance, and general productivity tasks.

The company said the new model represents another step toward delivering high-performance AI at lower operating costs without sacrificing reliability.

Anthropic Product Lead Dianne Penn said the release reflects the company's rapid pace of AI development and its goal of making frontier intelligence available to more users.

Improved Efficiency and AI Safety

Anthropic stated that Opus 5 is more efficient than the previously released Opus 4.8 model while maintaining strong performance across a wide range of enterprise applications.

Internal testing also found that Opus 5 was less capable of exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities than the company's flagship Fable 5 model. As a result, Anthropic said Opus 5 requires fewer safety restrictions while remaining more resistant to manipulation and misuse than several earlier Claude models.

Opus 5 vs. Fable 5

Anthropic recommends Opus 5 for organizations seeking cost-effective AI for daily operations, while reserving Fable 5 for complex, long-duration autonomous projects that require higher levels of reasoning and sustained task execution.

The company emphasized that users can choose between the two models based on workload complexity, performance requirements, and operating costs.

Competition in the Global AI Market

The launch comes as competition intensifies among leading AI developers, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, xAI, and Chinese AI companies such as Moonshot AI.

When asked about Moonshot AI's open-weight Kimi K3 model, Anthropic said it remains unclear whether open-weight AI systems can consistently handle sophisticated real-world tasks at the same level as proprietary frontier models.

As AI development accelerates worldwide, companies continue balancing performance, cost, and safety while competing to build the next generation of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
