Liberty vs. Wings WNBA Game Postponed After Travel Delays Ground New York Team
The WNBA has postponed Thursday night's game between the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings after mechanical problems with the Liberty's charter flight prevented the team from traveling to Texas. The matchup has been rescheduled for Monday, forcing adjustments to both teams' upcoming schedules.
Mechanical Issues Delay Liberty's Trip to Dallas
The New York Liberty were unable to travel to Dallas after their charter flight experienced mechanical problems before departure.
The team had planned to leave New York on Wednesday, but the flight was delayed for several hours. Social media posts from Liberty players indicated they remained on the aircraft overnight without taking off.
By Thursday morning, the team was still in New York, making it impossible to arrive in time for the scheduled game.
WNBA Reschedules Matchup for Monday
The league announced that the game between the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings has been moved to Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET (7:00 p.m. CT).
The postponement allows the Liberty additional time to travel while minimizing further disruption to the regular-season schedule.
Players Share Frustration During Delay
Liberty rookie Pauline Astier posted about the lengthy delay on social media, revealing that the team had spent nearly 10 hours waiting on the tarmac before the flight was ultimately unable to depart.
The extended delay left players stranded in New York instead of traveling to Texas as planned.
Teams Enter Game on Different Streaks
The postponement comes at a challenging time for the Liberty.
New York enters the weekend with a 13-11 record and has lost three consecutive games, dropping five of its last seven contests.
Dallas, meanwhile, has been one of the WNBA's hottest teams. The Wings (16-8) have won five straight games, their longest winning streak of the season, and currently sit fourth in the league standings.
Busy Schedule Awaits Both Teams
Before the rescheduled game, both clubs still have other commitments.
The Liberty are scheduled to visit the Indiana Fever on Saturday before traveling to Texas.
The Wings will host the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday afternoon before facing New York the following night in the rescheduled contest.
The compressed schedule means both teams will have little recovery time before meeting on Monday.
Why the Postponement Matters
Although weather-related delays are common in professional sports, postponements caused by charter flight mechanical issues are relatively rare in the WNBA.
The incident highlights the logistical challenges teams can face during a long regular season, particularly when travel disruptions occur close to game time.
The league will now hope both teams can resume their schedules without further delays.
