Sam Neill Dies at 78; ‘Jurassic Park’ Star Remembered as a Beloved Screen Legend
Actor Sam Neill, whose career spanned more than five decades and included iconic performances in Jurassic Park, The Piano, and Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78. His family announced that Neill died suddenly and unexpectedly in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones.
The New Zealand-born actor had been treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in recent years. Although he publicly shared his cancer diagnosis in 2023, his family said he was cancer-free at the time of his death after scans earlier this year showed no evidence of the disease.
Family Confirms Sudden Death
In a statement, Neill's family said he passed away peacefully with his family by his side and thanked the medical staff who cared for him.
The family requested privacy as they grieve and said additional details would be shared at a later time.
Neill revealed in 2023 that he had undergone chemotherapy after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He later described the disease as being in remission while continuing maintenance treatment.
Tributes Pour In From Around the World
News of Neill's death prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and fellow actors who remembered both his talent and generosity.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called him "one of the greats," crediting Neill with helping bring New Zealand storytelling to a global audience.
Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described him as "thoughtful, curious, and decent," while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Neill earned a lasting place in Australian cinema through decades of memorable performances.
Australian actress Toni Collette remembered him as a "hero, legend, sweetheart, and great friend," adding that he would be deeply missed.
Hollywood Remembers a Respected Collaborator
Neill's longtime colleagues also paid emotional tributes following the announcement.
Laura Dern, who starred alongside him as Dr. Ellie Sattler in the Jurassic Park franchise, described Neill as a lifelong friend whose loyalty, kindness, and humor never faded.
Director Steven Spielberg said working with Neill on Jurassic Park was one of the highlights of his career, calling him an exceptionally collaborative actor whose legacy will live on through generations of fans.
Co-star Jeff Goldblum honored Neill by sharing a photograph from the franchise alongside the message, "The next great adventure begins."
Director Colin Trevorrow, who reunited with Neill for Jurassic World Dominion, praised his calm presence and described him as "a deeply soulful and beautiful man."
A Career Defined by Versatility
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, he moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, as a child and later adopted the name Sam during his school years.
He began acting while attending the University of Canterbury before building a successful career in New Zealand and Australia.
His international breakthrough came with Sleeping Dogs in 1977, followed by acclaimed performances in My Brilliant Career and The Piano.
Global audiences came to know him best as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).
Beyond film, Neill earned praise for television work, including his portrayal of Major Chester Campbell in the BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders.
Across more than 50 years in entertainment, he accumulated over 150 film and television credits, becoming one of the most recognizable actors from New Zealand.
Honors and Final Projects
Neill received numerous honors throughout his career, including appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1991 for services to acting.
He was later named a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and formally accepted a knighthood in 2022 following changes to New Zealand's honors system.
His final released film was The Fox (2025), while his last television appearance came in Netflix's Untamed (2025). He is also expected to appear posthumously in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort, both scheduled for release in 2027.
Remembered for His Optimism
In his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, Neill reflected openly on his cancer diagnosis and his outlook on life.
Speaking about mortality at the time, he said he was not afraid of dying but simply did not want to stop living because he enjoyed life so deeply.
Sir Sam Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy that stretches from independent cinema to some of Hollywood's most enduring blockbusters.
