Andrea Pirlo Withdraws From Italy Coach Race After Backlash Over Russian Betting Firm Links
Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has confirmed he is no longer a candidate to become the next head coach of the Italy national football team, ending days of speculation after criticism over his commercial association with a Russian betting company.
Pirlo's appointment had not been officially confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) but was widely expected before political opposition and public scrutiny intensified.
Pirlo Confirms Withdrawal
In a statement posted on social media, Pirlo said he learned he was no longer under consideration for the national team role and addressed the controversy surrounding his links to Fonbet, a Russian betting company.
The former World Cup winner said his work as the company's global ambassador was strictly a commercial and sporting partnership connected to his coaching role at United FC in Dubai.
Pirlo rejected suggestions that the collaboration reflected any political position, saying he had never expressed support for views attributed to him during the public debate.
Political Criticism Intensifies
Several Italian politicians publicly questioned Pirlo's suitability for one of the country's highest-profile sporting positions because of his association with Fonbet.
Critics argued that individuals who continued commercial relationships linked to Russia after 2022 should not hold prominent national roles.
The controversy intensified after reports highlighted Pirlo's participation in promotional events organized by Fonbet in Moscow, where he appeared alongside several Russian public figures.
Ukraine War Links Fuel Debate
Attention also focused on a Fonbet event held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, where Pirlo attended alongside former Italian defender Marco Materazzi.
The event featured Russian singer Shaman, who has publicly supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and included appearances by Russian footballer Artem Dzyuba.
Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych criticized Pirlo's participation, saying it was disappointing to see celebrated sports figures associated with events taking place during the ongoing conflict.
FIGC Faces Pressure Over Coaching Search
The controversy has complicated the Italian Football Federation's search for a new national team coach following Gennaro Gattuso's departure earlier this year.
Media reports suggest newly appointed technical director Paolo Maldini has been overseeing the recruitment process alongside adviser Leonardo, with Italy preparing for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches and qualification for Euro 2028.
Italian media have reported that other potential candidates include Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini, after approaches to Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti were unsuccessful.
Italy Continues Search for New Manager
Italy is seeking a new head coach after another disappointing international campaign that included failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The federation has not yet announced who will replace Gattuso as it continues evaluating candidates ahead of a crucial period for the national team.
